Farewell old Strand, hello Genlyte-Strand?

It now appears that the auction at Strand Kirkcaldy will now be for "all assets with the exception of stock". Seems that an offer has already been made on the stock items and they are being sold in bulk before the main sale.

We are under offer on the stock of specialist lighting and we would wish to conclude on this element of the sale prior to the auction sale. If you have an interest in this aspect of the sale, please contact us and submit any offers on or before this Friday 11th Aug 2006, 12 noon. If you require to view these items, please contact Fiona Robertson on 0141 570 4000 who will arrange viewing, by appointment, on site.

We have just ordered some parts for a pollux 5k from AC lighting and it appears these are coming from Italy

Baz

Opera North

Baz is correct, the Quartzcolor range (Film and Television) is still being manufactured in Italy, If you have any requirements for stock or spares we would be pleased to help you.

That sort of makes sense. The way I heard it is that Quartzcolor are still in operation over in Italy, but have been completely cut loose by Genlyte as part of the accquisition process (all links with Strand having been severed).

The partial catalogue (stock only, not fittings or tooling) for the Strand Kirkcaldy sale is now available HERE. The full catalogue is expected later today. Note that it doesn't display particularly well in Firefox, fine in IE.

Latest news (I am on that auctioneer's mailing list) is that the sale has been split - all of the manufacturing equipment is being auctioned as planned, but the stock and spares are being sold by "private treaty" - ie not public auction - with bids to be in by next Wednesday.

Have a look at the catalogue...

Over the years I've been to a number of industrial auctions, which are always the result of a company hitting the wall. I've got some good stuff, and some absolute lemons. But somehow looking through the bones of what remains of what was the first great name in UK stage lighting is really really sad.

Auctions are usually held in the premise of what was the company of whats being flogged off, and when you walk in the door there is this really odd feeling of lives and times destroyed, you can almost feel and smell that just a few weeks previously this was a thriving community of a generally loyal staff, who almost never see it coming. Work today, gone tomorrow. Years of skill and resource aquisitions reduced to a few pages in an auctioneers catalogue.

I'm so glad that I'm far enough away that I cant possiby be there.

There's a lot of ETC, ADB, Juliat, Selecon and Altman lanterns going under the hammer in that auction!!

Yep, but only one of each.

Umm....

There's actually a LOT of Strand luminaires listed there, along with quite a few 100's, 200's and 300 desks.....!

Pity the frozen north is so far away.....

Errr ... yes, there are, which is to be expected at an auction of the contents of the Strand factory. That's not what Brian and I were referring to, though - we were talking about the lanterns from other manufacturers which appear in the auction catalogue.

It's not that far out of the way - about 20 miles from Edinburgh.

All of the lanterns, desks and stock - everything on the catalogue above lot 700 - is being sold by tender rather than by auction. I believe this means submitting "sealed bids" by Wednesday, rather than bidding "live" in the auction.

As David says, these can be sad occasions. I've been to several, and the ones that are held in the "auction warehouse" rather than onsite have a completely different atmosphere.

And I was in Fife last weekend. The weather was rather nice. The kids were swimming in the sea....

OK - sorry - had a bit of a blonde/TOG moment...! :D

Thought you just mean there was ONLY the other gear....

Not really sure what they mean by sale by tender, though....

OK - maybe you bid by a sealed bid, but how does that work? If 30 people all decide that they want lot 'x', and all send a sealed bid of £250 for an SL lantern, then how do the auctioneers decide on who's platter it lands?

Or is it a case of bidding for a job lot? If so, how are lots to be split?

Showing my inexperience of auction technique here.....

B-)

As I read it they are expecting one bid for all the lots. Highest bid takes all.

Which is why it would be a bit tricky IMHO for them to get rid.

After all, with such a large stock of, well, stock, it would have to be a major player who could afford to invest in that amount of kit, and when everyone else seems to be rather keen to get shot of their own Strand items, would they actually GET a buyer....

Of course, it could be a rather shrewd move for an entrepreneurial technician with cash burning a hole in his jeans (** laughs out loud **!! :D) to dive in and thus support the loyal Strand-lovers around.....
