a positively charged carbon rod, and a negatively charged carbon rod which the operator (wearing a welding mask, large gauntlet gloves and all necessary protective gear!) shorted out with a third carbon rod. It was a pretty cool effect really!
Sounds utterly terrifying to me.

I have no idea how you could even begin to justify those risks...

Neither do I - I was the ASM on the show and steered well clear of it.

 

Sounds like a carbon arc welding thingie to me, have never seen one, but read about it in "the welding engineers pocket book", 1947 edition. Was apparently the original way of arc welding, before coated rods.

 

It could well have been adapted from that - the nice people at Firework Professionals in Christchurch were the ones that had built the thing, along with a large gas cannon like an oversized bird-scarer which we also used.
