Thanks for the further advice. I at first thought that the suggestion was to hang drapes against the walls. The followup, to hang them away from the walls by about 2 inches is more in line with what I understood about acoustics. Insofar as this will help a little more with bass absorption.

As for the ceiling, I wasn't planning on hanging them parallel to the ceiling. I was going to hang vertically downwards, thus creating more of a barrier between FOH speakers and the back wall. But I will certainly try the back wall first, just have to work out how to space it away!

Diffusion would be nicer on the back wall. But far outside of our realms! We are lucky enough to be able to rebuild our school hall in a year or twos time and so they will hopefully design with these things in mind!
