Dual CD players

If it's any help we have Denon DN-D4000 and the newer DN-D4500's in our hire stock and we've had not problems with them at all, and they've had some hammering! One advantage we like of 'DJ' players is they tend to have very good anti-shock built in, though that's not really an issue in your average theatre control room! We use them for a lot of things from playback of baking tracks on pop roadshow type shows, to DJ use.

On the subject of a player that will play any disc though, you'll be lucky. Some people burn discs that no player will ever play. Rubbish blank + rubbish burner + burnt at 52x speed + lots of scratches = no chance! It still amazes me that people use CDRWs for audio - it's not like CDRs are expensive and they're far more compatible.

Actually, CDRW's can often work in players that won't play CDR's. I seems to be to do with the dye used in the disc. A CDRW looks to the laser much like a pressed disc where as the CDR reflectivity is quite different and some (older) lasers don't work well (or at all) with them. Something to keep in mind.
