I have always used on board sound and never had a problem with the quality.
If you read a few of the threads on laptop sound, you will find that you are in the minority. Most laptops only have a headphone socket, and due to an adverse interaction between the PSU and earth, they are unusable connected to an earthed sound system.

I think your sig says quite a lot...

All the laptops I have used have more than just a headphone socket, and maybe I am in the minority that don't suffer from bad laptop sound.

really?

can you be more specific - brands, model numbers etc.

I can't remember the last time I saw a laptop - or indeed any pc without a specialist sound card - that had anything other than a headphone output.

I never said more than one audio output, I thought you meant more than one sound card socket... How do you expect me to remember the models of every laptop I use?

I think even one example would be handy, since several posters have now said that they are not aware of a laptop with a sound output other than a headphone (3.5mm) jack. Thus we would be very interested to find even one example of laptop which had an alternative output.

Mine is about 4 years old and came from Novatech. I was a reduced "end of line" one when I got it, I can't remember what they called it, and it's not written on it anywhere.

Mic in & headphone out - both pretty c**p. But I have an optical out, which is very clean & saves me from the dreaded laptop earth loop. Getting optical into an analogue desk is often done using a minidisk recorder as a/d, though I do have an optical/spdif box which also helps in some cases.

I also have a PCMCIA soundcard with optical in & out which is sometimes useful, though it does need the drivers installing when using somebody else's laptop. Again though, it's a good way of beating that ground loop.

I had another bad experience with a widescreen laptop yesterday, mainly because it was on a 4:3 projector. The only good experience I have had with a widescreen laptop was with a Sony VAIO VGN-S3XP, when plugged into a 4:3 projector it changed its resolution to 1024x768 (4:3) with black bars down the side of the screen so the picture on the laptop screen was still good compared to the Acer and Toshiba widescreen laptops.

I'm a big fan of toshibas, the one I'm typing on now (Sat Pro A30) has being running strong for 3 years (touch wood) and hasn't had the most loving of lifes - couple of train journeys a week, usually running for the next train (thank you public transport), being dropped 3 foot onto a steel deck by a friend, I've used it for presentations and video playback throughout, I agree with the sound issues though, fortunately it hasn't really been a problem (the video playback has usually been image only)

not had any problems hooking up widescreens, not that much experience with them though

Indeed, my old laptop is awful for noise when plugged in. However, I don't recall noise from it when I used the original charger that came with the laptop, I only really noticed it after I got a new charger.

As yet, I've not tested my new macbook on a PA, but I'll give that a try next time I'm in work!
