How do you set up a mixer's EQ?

Thanks for your replies. As an inexperienced operator I find the multiplicity of controls somewhat confusing even though having a degree in electronics means I know how they all work!

As luck would have it the drummer of the band was caught smoking an hour before he was to perform in the year 11 leaver's assembly and was sent home, performance cancelled. The rest of the band looked gutted as they needed to be videoed for a coursework assignment. It's tough being rock gods! ("I'm sorry Mick but Keith just won't stop smoking") BTW their volume was so excruciatingly loud I wore ear defenders during their rehearsal and couldn't hear any EQ-ing, or much else, so the OP became a tad academic. In fact I was thinking their volume might need risk assessing.

Also, I said to the singer "Please don't swing the microphone round by its cable". So he swung the mic round by its cable, off it flew and hit the floor halfway down the hall. So our nice new SM58 has now got another dent (to go with the one that happened when I dropped it- the shame! the shame!) After that he contented himself with letting it wind around his neck until it hit him on the cheekbone. Does anyone do risk assessments on microphone usage?

After that I'd be taking my mic back. If he wants to continue he can use his own.

You say he doesn't own one? What a shame! :)

A quick look at the historic pictures of Robert Plant or Roger Daltry would confirm that certain countermeasures are required to prevent the mic and cable from parting company...
