Actually I can see where the poster is maybe on a different page...

SOME lanterns have yokes of course that can travel all round the body of the lantern unimpeded.

Examples - Par cans, Prelude F, many other smaller fresnels, S4 pars (and multipars).

 

That means that in practice, they could be mounted on a vertical bar with a suitable clamp and still be in the correct orientation for proper use.

that said, as I've indicated, it's not necessarily something I'd recommend. Have done so on odd occasions in the past where there wasn't a spare boom arm, but it does limit movement a bit on most lanterns.
