Fully automated solutions include Winamp visualizer (AVS), Milkdrop and R4, these can be scripted to create your own animations or you can use some of the many thousands of existing presets. You might also like Visualjockey (www.visualjockey.com) this is a fairly comprehensive software which can create animations based on audio input as well as playback video files and add effects to them. The effects parameters can be mapped to audio levels, BPM or internal LFO generators.
