New Mixer

I personally think there would be more questions asked apart from "What Mixer" etc. Professional DJ`s use PA equipment and often want advice on...

DSP - Sound

Active Speaker Systems - Sound

EQ - Sound

DSP - Sound (again)

Amplifers - Sound

DMX issues - Lighting

Those topics are already covered in the forums, and people here have a wide range on knowledge. If you had a DJ forum, most of the topics would get moved out to the more specialised forums, as that's where people would want to look for them.

I think if DJs (or installers) want to ask questions about DJ equipment (mixers, CDJs, turntables) they should ask away. Members giving unhelpful answers should be dealt with in the same way as any other thread (which I'm sure would happen anyway as the mod team are on the ball here), however, as with any other thread, we expect people to be asking questions in a professional manner. Asking "what mixer goes the loudest" is never going to be acceptable here, asking "which DJ mixer would you recommend for a ?? capacity bar which is used by in house DJs only playing CDs?" should be welcomed. If none of the membership know the answer, then adding a sub-forum won't help.

While the equipment and techniques used are similar throughout the industry, there is a lack of knowledge here as most members don't come into contact with the kit which is why people get recommended to other forums. I am used to DJ kit, but only professional (A&H, Pioneer, Denon, etc) kit which is then plugged up to full club PA systems. I know virtually nothing about mobile DJ gear and would be unable to help on any questions of that type.

Finally, there is a distinct lack of professionalism/knowledge in the DJ industry and there's no getting away from that fact. Those who find us here and the ones who spend time and energy investigating and investing in their own equipment are generally the ones this doesn't apply to (and if this wasn't the case, I wouldn't need comps / limiters / people watching every DJ to make sure they don't blow expensive gear up despite being told the RED LIGHTS ARE BAD!). For every DJ I would trust using my gear without someone baby-sitting them, I can name at least 10 (some of them famous names) which I won't let them touch anything till they've had (another) lecture and got someone watching their every move.

At least in my part of the world it's simple. We call the former category 'employed' and the latter category 'unemployed'! And if we do get the odd special one, then it's all about the carefully setup soundweb feeding into a D&B rig!
