Very little pickup before feedback

I think it's time for a bit of honesty in this topic, namely that hanging microphones NEVER give a great amount of gain before feedback. They can provide a bit of light reinforcement (especially if the actors are projecting well) but they can't work miracles.

 

Yes, ringing out the system and adding some EQ can help. However, even this won't compensate for soft voices on stage--if the sound you hear from the FOH speakers is approaching the level you hear from the performers, feedback will be a problem.

 

Besides EQ and "managing expectations", the only other suggestion I'd make is to actually mix the mics and not just turn them on and leave them. Every time you double the number of mics open, you get 3dB closer to feedback...so if you have a single speaker upstage centre, turn on just the mic closest to him and take the others out of the mix. This'll buy you some extra level.
