I kinda thought that it was to stop the sound from coming out the sides of the boxs, making things sound bad.

then I read these posts and now I know, but it was still in my head that I neded the stuffing.

Fibre glass is nasty stuff to work with. It sheds tiny glass particles which irritate the skin and can do serious damage if inhaled! Wear overalls, gloves, goggles, and a dust mask when working with the stuff.

 

This used to be the recommended procedure but current thinking is that fibreglass isn't as bad as was once thought. Yes, it is an irritant so you should wear a mask and gloves but it doesn't do as much damage to the lungs as previously thought.
