Thanks for all your replies, they have been a great help and it's nice to see we can get support whenever needed.

 

I have been away and not actually had time to do anything you have suggested!

 

When I have done what is suggested I will get back to you!

Well you learn something new everyday!

 

As I unplugged one of the fresnels off the bar, an IEC lead fell out of the back of it!

 

Clearly I have never moved these otherwise I would have known this!

 

Is that common? That they use a 15a IEC lead in lanterns?

 

I have never come across this before! But it could solve the riddle of the flickering!

Indeed!

 

IECs aren't hugely common, because you they needed to be the heat resistant types - Strand used those, but as I know only too well - they do loosen up and arc, then go off - especially if you've bodged up modified the wrong lead to fit. Some of the cheaper Chinese ones have IECs, and I'd bet they won't last for years and years.

 

Chances are pretty good, I'd have thought, that these are the problem.
