iPad v Android tablet

I think my opinions on the iPad haven't changed because of them and if anything have pushed me closer to Android. I have had two Android phones which have been nearly flawless in operation (HTC Desire & Samsung Galaxy S2). Because of this I'm looking closely at the Samsung tablet - but it also has some flaws: no user expandable micro SD slot for instance. With the prices of memory being so cheap (Amazon are today selling a 32Gb MSD card for £13.61) how can the manufactures charge such a lot for so little in built memory?

I bought my wife a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10") and that has a microSD slot. She and the kids are very happy with it. I don't get a look in.

Android tablets are still young compared to the iPad. The operating system also has to cater for a much wider array of hardware than an iPad, which is a very standardised single platform. The nice thing about Android is that it is growing up quickly and scales up to big displays.

It's actually quite hard to advise between iPad and Android at the moment. Each has it's own niche.

I think the most telling thing about the future of Android is that Apple hate it so much and are doing their best to hobble it with litigation.

The other arguable good thing with android is that if you want to create an app you can for free! (learning code etc but still free) apple apps are expensive to create and have quite locked systems from what I know via the IT dept, who were meant to be doing app creation until they needed to buy various bits of software + idevice/s

Just a quick one… I've loved Apple stuff since LC II times circa 1991/2 (when you could do vector graphics without typing things) and having used it professionally in a few capacities, still think it just works - I'm using an iPad on stage 6 nights a week at the mo in a band gig for rhythm tracks and Yammy Setlist for MIDI etc at the mo. I want to concentrate on my keyboard playing really and can without worrying so far. (As a back-up - I'll just play more notes on the piano!)

You're not tied to the iTunes cataloguing system (or iPhoto's etc.) and there are better apps to organise stuff and use in a show situation. Battery life is great with the iPad 2. This one's not got many apps loaded up - no Angry Birds ;-)

I do LOVE the iPad for the musical aspect. I originally got it for Garage Band, but ended up buying the FL studio mobile app which is a lot of fun.

Battery life on the iPad is unquestionably good. The fact that the iPad is basically a touchscreen and a massive battery with a super slick processor PCB tucked in-between is very much in Apples style. You just can't really fault their tech from an end user simplicity perspective.

Doing real musical stuff, I still prefer ProTools (which crashes a lot less than Logic on our singer's laptop!) and a real synth MIDI'd up or whatever. Not sold on the soft-synth thing just yet

But for replay and stuff, yes Clive - it's simple enough and reliable enough for us on stage. Using it for a Yammy digital desk remote for easy gigs seems great too according to my now ex-colleague. Dunno if he got the Zero88 software working with it yet...

May even risk doing some MIDI > DMX thing with the iPad one day - and I'll trust it! Our current venue's only got 10 LED 56s (pointing nowhere much) doing not much from a generic 192 Table of DMX Pro Desk Master Elation/Showtec/Eurolite thing and could do with a bit sparkle!

All of the software (Xcode) for developing iOS apps is free and you can download it, start coding and get your app running in a simulator without spending a penny.

To test on-device and to distribute apps you need to pay $99 a year for a Developer Membership which entitles you to have as many apps as you want on the App Store, test apps on devices, distribute ad-hoc to others and also get code-level assistance from Apple should you need it.

I was not at all keen on Apple's terms and conditions attached to this... basically they can veto you and your apps at any time they please, with no reason necessary. Also the whole application process seems to be designed to give you a certain feeling of your inferiority to the mighty Apple. Or maybe that's just me.

...I did it... and spent £250 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10"... from John Lewis + a 32Gb mSD card from Amazon..

The nearest and dearest seems happy - If it works out, I might have to get one...

Thanks to everyone for their help on this...

Good man. May I commend Tune-In Radio as an App? Never be without Test Match Special again...

Am I the only person in the world who fails to see the point of a tablet computer? Yes, I was taught touch typing as a teenager (which probably makes me a dinosaur) but the though of trying to do most of the the things I do with a computer without benefit of a tactile keyboard gives me the shakes. Yes, I know you can add a separate keyboard--but isn't that just the long way around to create a laptop?

I have an iPhone (my only venture into Apple technology) and it works--but I seriously dislike having to use that wretched iTunes software to put things on the phone. A few months back I used the phone (with Play Fade Pause software by the BR owner!) and that worked well. However, getting all the sound onto the phone without letting Apple try to manage things and transfer all my 1.5 terabytes of sound effects onto the phone had me tearing my hair out.

Anyway, if you really want a tablet, my usual advice is to decide what you want to do and look at software availability. That may make the decision for you.

Tablets are not currently a replacement for a full laptop or computer. They are just a more convenient way to use certain applications like games or video based sites. Ever tried using a laptop in bed?

Tablets are also better suited to people who are less technically literate, and prone to downloading viruses (on PC and Mac!) because they are easily duped by fake offers of gifts and porn.

All the time. Lean on a pile of pillows, draw your knees up and rest the laptop on your thighs with the screen opened farther than normal. Works a treat.

The glass of port on the bedside table is optional.
