There is an IEC standard for BNC connectors which states that 50 and 75 ohm types should be mechanically compatible and mate together in a non destructive way - which makes sense, as it would be terrible if damage were to be caused surely?

 

Yes, there is interchangeability now, but the 50Ω BNC used to have a much larger diameter pin than the 75Ω one. All Tektronix scope's were fitted with 50Ω BNC sockets and I remember (going back to the 1960s now) having to change them on Vectorscopes and waveform monitors to get a good connection. The 50Ω BNC still has a larger diameter centre conductor internally but the exposed pin is the same as the 75Ω one.
