Another "which microphone" question

I agree with you James. Anyone reading this posting on a first visit to this site might be forgiven for thinking that microphones by Neumann, DPA and Schoeps amongst others were not worth the higher prices they cost. They are worth the money and are in use every day on hired PA systems. Not cheap and not appropriate for anything other than top quality systems but worth the cost because of their superb performance.

I'm sure a deal can be done to set precise tolerances for the frequency response and sensitivity of each capsule, and reject any out of spec, which RED5 have probably done, but these kits are the same base product. I picked just 3 - all sorts of versions are available.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that, of course Neumann, DPA and Schoeps are worth the money (if you can afford them) but, as you say, not common hire stock. There are many grades of microphone and, mostly, the quality is reflected in the price, I don't recall any comments in this thread suggestion otherwise.

the tom mics and the bass drum mic (not here with me) look identical to Paul's pictures. Except that the G4M and Pulse kits carry a mix of these tom mics and another type of tom mic (why two types?) where red5 only carry the one I have linked. I have an old pulse drum mic that I use for shoving inside a trash can but on bass drum duty it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the red5 and it doesn't look anything like their new one - at least I assume it's new, I hadn't seen it before.

I used to see vocal mics around very similar to red5's (linked above) but haven't seen any around lately. I wonder whether the red5 claim about unique capsules is something I have read or interpreted from what I have read and whether maybe it just applies to the vocal mics. Maybe this should be in a separate thread at this point - anyhow, I thought it was worth sharing what I thought I knew!

ps excuse the cheese sandwich crumbs on the desk!

Audix have two different tom mics, D2 and D4, the D4 has more bass response to suit larger toms. The kit we have has 2 x D2 and 1 x D4 (as well as 1 x D6 kick mic and a. i5 for snare) They also list them as instrument mics BTW.

I get your point about Red5 mics but SE are in a different league, not rider friendly but certainly on a par or better than the standard Beta58s et al.

+1

sE are far better known for studio rather than live work but their quality (build and sound) is up there with the "big boys" and, indeed, many of their mics are my first choice go-to ones.

But rider friendly is something else again and you won't go wrong by being very conservative in choices, hence mentioning two mics I actively dislike but which are "industry standard".

It's difficult to see where 'different league' applies. There are very few Chinese large diaphragm mics that don't sound good. They don't sound like European or American mics but that's good. The SEs are good mics and worth the money but other Chinese designs can sound very, very similar. It's just like the range from any single manufacturer some are really great, others less so. SE have selected a decent range from a huge product range. Yoga, who are one of the big manufacturers make lords of the common ones we see badged up. Their minimum order quantity is now 500+ for many! meaning only big boys can buy. The other common sources build to order and this is where things get tricky in that sound changes between batches if you buy in. 50s like me. The really specialist ones that cost lots sell even slower so a batch for me could be just 10, just in case they change a critical component - which they often do!

Sorry Paul but I have to disagree. sE don't work like the company you mention. They have their own very clever designers, and, although they started with the OEM route, since 2003 they have made all their own stuff at their own factory and they never, ever make diaphragms for third parties. I have no problem with the cheaper Chinese stuff--even own some--but, for studio at least, put sE in a similar category sound and build-wise to AKG and even, in some cases, Neumann. Indeed, I have a couple of Neumann mics in the cupboard and rarely bring them out because I think my humble sE2200A mics are better on a wide variety of material.

Similarly, I have 5 aging AKG451 mics and 3 x 391 (Blue Line mics). I needed more, tried the sE1A and was blown away by the sound at a price a fraction of AKG (even if you could still get the "proper" AKGs).

Sorry to be an sE evangelist but they are NOT like the pile of other Chinese mics. Slight PRish, but the sE STORY IS HERE. (FYI, I got into sE early on because their UK office (probably the garage mentioned in the link but it was actually a small industrial unit with a garage door) used to be in Leighton Buzzard where I lived--I took full advantage of their free loaners and even passed them back some feedback on their early offerings so I'm not totally unbiased.)

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I'm probably going to get something along the lines of 3 or 4 more SM58s, a couple more 57s, plus a Beta 58a, a Beta 57a and a Beta 87a for vocals.

Drum wise as its such good value, probably the Red 5 RVK7 drum set with an extra tom mic.

If there's any money left we might also buy an Audix OM5 and a Sennheiser E945 so we have a range of nice vocal mics available.
