I do appreciate the situation/difficulties as I have a niece and a cousin (single parent) teachers in junior school and both are involved with extra curricular events other than drama.

However in my very slightly more than limited experience the school play was traditionally all prepped and rehearsed in class time, typically: Drama, English language, Art, wood/metalwork and a relatively limited number of extra hours.

This certainly wasn't the case at my school and I'd guess that ciriculuam time as got tougher since,especially as plays would normally be across many year groups I can't imagine this working in an 8 or 9 intake school which isn't that unusual anymore from what I hear.
